‘WWII-Era Mortar Shell’ Discovered in Norfolk

An unexploded device – later confirmed as a WWII-era two-inch mortar round – was discovered by a dog walker at Winterton Dunes in Norfolk on the afternoon of 02/02/2024. The device was destroyed by an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team.

The area of Winterton-on-Sea was heavily fortified against invasion during WWII, with the establishment of coastal minefields, Anti-Tank (AT) ditches and pillboxes, along with ancillary structures and earthworks.  The Winterton Dunes were also used for military training during WWI.
